Banana bread with nuts and chocolate pieces

Today I want to share my favorite recipe for healthy banana bread with you.

Seitenansicht: gesundes Bananenbrot mit Nüssen und Schokodrops

Who doesn't love banana bread? It's now one of my favorite cakes. Especially when it's still lukewarm, I can't get enough of it. But banana bread can be a little calorie-packed. So if you want to watch your calorie intake, you'll have to be careful – but you can also simply bake a low-sugar version for a healthy banana bread. For example, with this recipe!

The recipe is super easy to adapt, and that's what I love about it. If you swap out just one ingredient, you get a completely different flavor. And the basic dough combines perfectly with nuts, chocolate, and fruit—so you can make it your own!

This recipe for healthy banana bread is super simple. The banana bread with chocolate chips is moist and soft and can easily be made vegan. By adding applesauce, the banana bread doesn't require any butter or oil. The walnuts and chocolate chips can, of course, be substituted for any other nuts or fruits if desired.

    Let's go!

    Ingredients for banana bread

    3-4 very ripe bananas

2 Eggs or vegan egg substitute

    2 tbsp Agave syrup

    120 g unsweetened applesauce

    1 tsp Vanilla extract

    250g Wholemeal spelt flour

50 g chopped walnuts (or nuts of your choice)

    60 g Dark chocolate drops

    ½ packet of baking powder

    1 tsp Cinnamon

    1 pinch of salt

Aids: Loaf pan, 2 mixing bowls, mixer

    preparation

    Teig für Bananenbrot in Kastenform

    1. Preheat the oven to 180ºC (top/bottom heat). Grease a baking pan or line it with baking paper.
    2. Mash the bananas in a bowl until smooth. Add the applesauce. Add the remaining liquid ingredients (eggs or egg substitute, vanilla extract, and agave syrup) and mix well.
    3. In another bowl, mix together the baking powder, flour, cinnamon and a pinch of salt and add to the liquid ingredients.
    4. Mix everything well until a dough forms.
    5. Then fold in the nuts and chocolate chips and pour the finished batter into the loaf pan. You can now scatter more chocolate chips on top for decoration.
    6. Bake in the oven for 40-45 minutes. Use a skewer to check if the banana bread is cooked through. Once it's done, remove it from the oven and let it cool. Then cut into approximately 1 cm wide pieces.

Preparation time: approx.50 minutes (10 minutes preparation + 40 minutes baking time)
