Vegan's grilled cheese sandwich - feed for the soul (recipe)
Melting cheese... It makes my heart sing! Especially when it's cheese made entirely without animal ingredients. Today we're making a vegan grilled cheese sandwich that's sure to warm your heart, too.
Grilled cheese on toast – is that even a thing here? In America, however, no series or sitcom can do without this hearty snack... And ever since "Gilmore Girls," I've also treated myself to a grilled cheese sandwich every now and then—plant-based, of course. It's just toooo good!
The best part: It's quick, easy to do, and can be plastered virtually any time of day or night!
If you're already a little familiar with a plant-based diet, you'll probably already have most of the ingredients at home. But even if you're less experienced in this area, I can confidently say: You can now find all the ingredients you need in almost any supermarket. Only the nutritional yeast flakes can be a little harder to find. But I'm now stocking those at my local REWE supermarket... You'll see: "Imitating" (melting) cheese isn't all that difficult. And, in my opinion, it tastes just as delicious. 😋
This vegan grilled cheese sandwich can't really be called healthy. 🤪 But it's also true comfort food. Not only is it suitable anytime: as a snack, for breakfast, or a midnight snack, but it's also quick and easy to prepare and super cheesy—and all without any animal ingredients.
Ingredients
- 2 slices Toast bread (z.B. Whole-grain toast)
- 1 tbsp vegan butter (z.B. Alsan)
- 1 tbsp Cornstarch/cornstarch
- 140 ml plant-based milk (z.B. oat milk)
- ¼ tsp Salt
- ¼ tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 tbsp white wine vinegar
- 2 handfuls vegan processed cheese (z.B. Simply V Grated/Violife Grated/…)
- 2 tbsp Yeast flakes (optional)
Tools: small pot, pan, whisk
preparation
- Melt the vegan butter in a small saucepan over medium heat.
- Once the butter is hot, whisk in the cornstarch to prevent lumps from forming.
- Add the milk alternative and wait a few minutes until the sauce thickens.
- Mix in the remaining ingredients (salt, turmeric, white wine vinegar, grated cheese, and yeast flakes, if desired). Stir well and wait until everything forms a homogenous mixture.
- Now spread butter on one side of each slice of toast. Toast one slice of toast in a small pan, buttered side down, over medium heat. Spread about 3 tablespoons of the vegan cheese sauce on the slice of toast. Place the second slice of toast on top (this time buttered side up). When the bottom slice of toast is lightly browned, flip the sandwich and heat the other side for a few more minutes.
- Serve and you’re done!
Preparation time: approx. 15 minutes
The sauce is enough for about 3-4 toasts – this vegan “cheese”sauce can also be used for pizza, lasagna, casseroles or with vegetables!
HAVE FUN TRYING IT OUT! 💛
